About Cologne
Situated on the Rhine River in western Germany, Cologne is one of the country's most unique and colorful cities. In terms of size, it is Germany's fourth largest city behind Berlin, Munch, and Hamburg. In terms of heritage, it one of the oldest settlements in Northern Europe having been established as a Roman colony in 50 A.D.
Cologne's most recognizable symbol is the famous Dom or cathedral, which dominates the skyline. Along with the cathedral, the locally brewed Koelsch beer, which is also the name of the local dialect, stand as enduring icons and represent a colorful Cologne subculture. This unique culture finds expression every year in the Cologne Carnival.
The city is also one of the cultural capitals of Germany and hosts an active and vibrant arts scene. More than 30 museums and galleries dot the cityscape with exhibitions ranging from Roman archaeological artifacts to contemporary art and sculpture. Cologne serves also as one of the media centers of the country along with Berlin. Television networks such as WDR and RTL and film production companies make their home in the area.
Long known for its tolerance and openness, Cologne is the center of Germany's homosexual community. Every year the city hosts one of the largest Gay Pride parades in Europe.
